Winning isn't getting people to agree.
I learned a lesson the hard way today.
I was in a WhatsApp group where people were discussing politics. I usually stay out of it.
But today, I chimed in with something short.
Just sharing my perspective.
They started challenging me...aggressively.
Now, I don't like spending time in political debates, so I tried to de-escalate.
They challenged me even further, demanding citations.
In the end, I said "I'll be right back" - I was going to get my sources.
But within seconds, they'd already decided I had 'lost':
"So the main argument goes down the toilet the moment you got some pushback."
"Lay it out here... or I will take it as you tried a comment without citations."
"So if someone pushes back slightly your whole worldview crumbles ok cool cool cool."
That was the moment I realized I wasn't being debated. I was being attacked.
It didn't matter that I was polite, or that I ACTUALLY came back with citations - like they demanded.
The moment I stepped outside the group's consensus, the goal was no longer to understand me, but to silence me.
I dropped 30+ citations covering economy, crime, and immigration. Sourced from both sides.
I showed data that favored the left AND data that favored the right.
Then I made my real point: none of it actually matters, because any citation can be recontextualized to weaponize any argument.
I left it at that.
None of the people who demanded my citations - who so adamantly claimed they were pursuing truth - actually responded.
The group chat moved on to sharing photos of their cats.
Reflecting on it, I realized what a mistake it was to engage at all.
Because they were never looking for the truth... They were defending their identity.
You cannot logic someone out of that.
You can present data. You can be fair and show both sides....
None of it matters.
Because the argument was never about the facts. It was about belonging.
I spent about an hour today on something that moved nothing forward. Time I could have spent building. Creating. Shipping.
That's the real cost.
"Winning" isn't about getting the other person to nod and say "you're right."
Real winning is about irrelevance.
The skeptics don't disappear (they never do).
They just stop mattering.
That's the Mandate.
In politics, the Mandate is to be elected.
In business, the Mandate is simply revenue.
And in life, the Mandate is results.
When the scoreboard speaks for you, it don't matter what people are saying.
People in group chat and Reddit threads are still arguing about who's wrong or who's right.
But the real winners are the ones who refuse to play that game.
I'm done arguing. I'm going back to building.
